Despite the large growth in the web 2.0 and social media with companies like Twitter and Facebook on a hiring frenzy there are still a lack of developers. People are just not studying computer science and companies are willing to pay high salaries for engineering talent. Big companies like Google, Facebook and even Apple have bought small companies just for the engineering talent. For example Facebook bought Gowalla and FriendFeed just for the coders and programmers- the proof that the acquisitions where just for the talent is that the companies where either shit down or not integrated to the Facebook ecosystem.

Codecademy is a start-up company that allows people to learn Java free, so if you are interested in coding, I suggest you start there. Codecademy has already attracted over a million users, which includes the Major of New York, Michael Bloomsburg.
Although it is not necessary in starting a company, most founders have a coding background and it certainly does not hurt to have the skills, especially when you are bootstrapping your business.
