Airbnb, the marketplace that lets you rent your house or apartment like a hotel has been a runaway success but it’s never far away from controversy.
Two women in Sweden’s capital Stockholm, rented their apartment whilst on vacation, the people renting the apartment came from Ireland and the Swedish police tracked escorts back to the apartment.
The owners came back to find their apartment has been used as a brothel without their knowledge or consent. They may face legal action by the police. It is currently unknown how common this is because they chances of getting caught are relatively slim.
Negative use like this makes people question the safety of letting strangers rent your apartment, but the same argument can be made with hotel guest. You never know what they are going to do but in the general sense, strange behavior and illegal activity in rented spots are not common but they do happen.
What can Airbnb or people renting their apartments do?
Perhaps Airbnb can introduce a screening process to reduce the risk of renting to convicted criminals and so forth. Or the landlords themselves can take the precaution on their own accord.
