TechCrunch is reporting the Bleacher Report has sold to Times Warner for about 175 million to 200 million. I write ‘advertising is not dead’ because as noted in a TechCrunch comment, Bleacher Report is primarily supported by advertising.
Here is part of the comment by Bleacher Reports VP of Revenue:
“Great day for websites that are powered by advertising — which, contrary to what almost every VC will tell you — is an outstanding business model.”
According to Quancast metrics Bleacher Report boasts about 20 million visitors a month and about 230 million pageviews, most of which are created by volunteers that right for free as well as paid contributors. TechCrunch reports the sports website was founded in 2006 with about 6000 contributors via Bloomsberg.
